As an investor whose long term strategy is based on valuing the S&P 500 in terms of gold, I must say that the current situation is extremely confusing. Perhaps it IS different this time….in terms of gold the s&p500 has only been higher than current valuations once since 71 in the period around the dot com boom when it went to around 5 ounces….
They told us thalidomide was safe. That blood transfusions for haemophiliacs were safe. That Hillsborough was safe. That the cladding on Grenfel wasn’t flammable. That OxyContin wasn’t addictive. That Teflon wasn’t poisonous. That lead paint wasn’t toxic. Sometimes past performance is a guide to future returns…..
